The Nature-Surrounded Rónay Villa in Csobánka Awaits Its New Owner
Can a hidden hillside village with a gently flowing stream, close proximity to Budapest, and an unspoiled atmosphere be truly appealing? We believe the answer is yes—and Csobánka is a perfect example. Nestled only 30 kilometres from the Hungarian capital, the village enjoys a pleasant microclimate created by the Pilis Hills, the surrounding forests, and the Dera Stream. It is no coincidence that a discreet villa district developed here. Rather than grand, classical mansions, the area is home to charming late-Eclectic and Historicist holiday villas, many of them featuring spacious verandas and timeless architectural character, creating a peaceful, garden-suburb atmosphere.
From the 1870s onwards, holiday homes flourished primarily in the Danube Bend—especially in Szentendre, Verőce, Leányfalu, Nagymaros, Zebegény and Visegrád. The surrounding forests are dominated by beech and oak trees, while the area is also home to several rare native plant species, including the Hungarian butcher's broom (Ruscus hypoglossum) and the striking Lenten rose (Helleborus purpurascens).
Today we would like to introduce the former Rónay Villa, an exceptional historic property in Csobánka that is now looking for a new owner. The family originally bore the surname Oexel and belonged to a noble lineage of German-Bavarian origin. The family's founder, Mátyás József Oexel, acquired extensive estates in southern Hungary in 1781, primarily around the village of Kiszombor1. In 1846, the family officially adopted the Hungarian surname Rónay. During the nineteenth century, the Rónay family became one of the region's prominent landowning dynasties while also holding influential positions in county administration. Among its members were deputy lord lieutenants, members of parliament and senior public officials. They built castles and manor houses and actively contributed to the cultural and economic development of their communities. Although there is no definitive historical evidence that the Csobánka villa belonged to this particular branch of the family, historical sources consistently refer to the building as the Rónay Villa, a name that has endured to this day.
The historic Rónay Villa, located on Csobánka's main street, is now offered for sale. With a history spanning more than a century, the property retains the timeless elegance and refined atmosphere of a classic bourgeois residence. The villa showcases characteristic elements of Historicist architecture, including generous ceiling heights of up to 3.5 metres and distinctive window designs. Structurally, it is a solid brick-built house with a traditional tiled roof. The approximately 160-square-metre residence offers five spacious rooms.
