Pécs – Hunyadi 29 Apartments with a Fairytale Garden
Pécs is the centre of Southern Transdanubia and the fifth-largest city in Hungary, with a population of approximately 140,000. The area was first inhabited by Celtic and Pannonian tribes, and later, in the 2nd century, the Romans founded the city under the name Sopianae. Two centuries later, it became an important Christian centre; the discovered Early Christian cemetery has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000. King Saint Stephen founded a bishopric here in 1009, and in 1367 King Louis the Great established a university in the city. Pécs’ cultural reputation was further enhanced by Bishop Janus Pannonius, one of the leading figures of Hungarian Latin-language poetry. Walking through the city centre, visitors can admire architectural monuments recalling the 150 years of Ottoman rule, such as the mosque of Pasha Gazi Kasim. During the 19th and 20th centuries, in addition to mining, industrial development also played an important role. Numerous factories operated in the city, including a poultry-processing plant, iron foundry, dairy factory, paper mill, and tobacco factory. However, Pécs gained its greatest fame through the Zsolnay porcelain factory, the brewery, the glove factory, and the organ-building manufactory.
When visiting Pécs, it is definitely worth exploring not only the mosque and the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, but also Széchenyi Square and the Basilica. Visitors should take a walk to Calvary Hill, explore the Mecsek Mountains, and admire the panorama from the TV Tower. The surrounding region is home to some of Hungary’s finest wine-growing areas, including Villány, Szekszárd, and the perhaps lesser-known village of Palkonya. Therefore, if you spend a few days in Baranya County, it is well worth dedicating one day to wine tourism.
The Hunyadi 29 Apartments offer an excellent opportunity for relaxation and recharging. Located in a quiet street just a 10-minute walk from Széchenyi Square, this guesthouse consists of five separate apartments. Each apartment has its own unique furnishings and style, reflected in their names: Bronze, White, Red, Green, and Gold. The atmosphere combines the world of contemporary art with a classic sense of elegance, enhanced by the Zsolnay-tiled entrance hall and the visible wooden roof beams. Together, these elements create an authentic Pécs experience. The Green Apartment is especially unique, as a graffiti artist has created several iconic scenes inspired by Pécs, which can be found inside the apartment. One example is the depiction of a local woman who was always seen walking around the city carrying a Skála and/or Tesco shopping bag. Through these details, guests can feel as if they have become part of everyday life in Pécs.
The apartment house also features a beautiful Mediterranean-style garden with a small ornamental pond. While relaxing in the garden jacuzzi or exercising in the fitness room, guests can listen to the singing of birds and enjoy complete relaxation. Since the accommodation is pet-friendly, visitors can even bring their own pets with them. After a refreshing break, guests can once again explore the city centre, discover local shops and restaurants, and perhaps even encounter talented musicians from Pécs, just as Hungary-famous bands and performers such as Halott Pénz, Punnany Massif, Kispál és a Borz, Kiscsillag, and 30Y were discovered here decades ago. Recalling XY’s words, this villa realises the dream that a grove itself can become a living space. The glass walls and openings create the impression that one is walking through nature, moving from one building to another. This is a perfect example of modern architecture: from a distance the building appears to be single-storey, while its true architectural character is revealed only from certain viewpoints, when approaching around the hillside. This further emphasises the harmony between nature and architecture, between the outdoors and the indoors.
