Villa Bagatelle – a family home, then a brothel, and today a bakery and bistro

The Bagatelle Villa, built in 1936, was originally a family home. Its builder was Vince Bene, a pharmacist, which is why a statue of Saint Roch was placed on the façade. At the saint’s feet sits a dog holding a piece of bread in its mouth. In 1944, a murder took place here. The surviving little girl, Erzsike, grew up and later founded a family in one half of the villa. Interestingly, she became one of the best-known caricaturists of the socialist era. Meanwhile, the other half of the villa housed the country’s last brothel, the Intim Drink Bar, which operated until 2008. In 2009, the building was purchased by Albrecht Wirtz and his wife, Ágnes. Based on the plans of László Benczúr and his team, the villa was renovated, and the Brót Bakery and Bistro opened its doors.
