The Andreánszky Manor House – whose owners included a State Secretary and a paleobotanist
Paleobotanist? A specialist who studies fossil plants. In the case of the manor house presented in this article, we are referring to Gábor Andreánszky, who, besides his political career and role as a Member of Parliament, was also one of the most significant Hungarian botanists of the first half of the 20th century. The old-growth forest surrounding the Andreánszky Manor House in Alsópetény today is part of his planted legacy.
We are visiting Alsópetény, in Nógrád County. The first written record of the settlement dates back to 1268, when it was still under the authority of the Csák noble family together with Felsőpetény. In 1507, Alsópetény came into the possession of István Werbőczy (a legal scholar and Palatine of Hungary), whose name may be familiar in connection with the Tripartitum law book. This work collected and described the legal regulations and customary law system of Hungary at the time. It was completed in 1514 and remained in force until 1848.
Turning our attention to the manor house, it was built in the Classical style as a single-storey building. Its owner and builder was Antal Somogyi. In the second half of the 18th century, the estate was purchased by Sándor Andreánszky, followed by István Andreánszky, who held the position of State Secretary. Later, it became the property of Gábor Andreánszky, who was not only a Member of Parliament but also a paleobotanist and a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
The manor house was affected by the passage of time, and its modern-day restoration was made possible thanks to photographs preserving the memory of its former glory. The current owner rebuilt the manor house faithfully based on these historical images. However, the old-growth forest surrounding it remains the result of Gábor Andreánszky’s planting efforts and is now protected at local level.
During the renovation, the owners aimed to meet the highest expectations of modern times while preserving the character of the historic building. The manor house has an area of 330 m² and includes a sauna house, a guest house, a stable, a log cabin, a wine cellar, a summer kitchen with a traditional oven, and an outdoor swimming pool. Surrounded by forest and meadows, the property radiates tranquillity and offers a perfect place for relaxation, slowing down, and recharging.
