Pátzay Wine Estate – Combining a Commitment to Quality Wine with the Opportunities Offered by Badacsony

Badacsony is a volcanic-origin mountain that currently rises to 438 metres above sea level. Celtic communities already lived here as early as the 3rd–2nd centuries BC. Archaeological finds from the Roman period have also been discovered in the area, and the military road leading from the Roman settlement of Aquincum crossed this region as well. It must have been a very lively place even in ancient times, already foreshadowing its popularity today. The wines of Badacsony are world-renowned. Their unique character can be attributed to the sub-Mediterranean climate created by the combination of Badacsony Mountain and Lake Balaton, the heat-retaining properties of the basalt formations, and the sunlight reflected from the surface of the lake.

While exploring Badacsony, or cycling around the mountain, visitors encounter countless vineyards, wineries, and traditional wine presses, complemented by event venues and accommodation facilities. The same is true for Badacsonytomaj, which originally belonged to the estates of the Esterházy family. From a cultural perspective, it is worth mentioning the three-nave, twin-towered Saint Emeric Church, a structure whose closest architectural counterpart can be found in France. The town is also home to five chapels, the wine press house of Róza Szegedi, and the Museum of Viticulture and Winemaking. For those wishing to admire the breathtaking panorama, almost any local winery offers an unforgettable experience: sitting on a terrace, tasting excellent wines while watching the sunset over Lake Balaton.

The Pátzay Wine Estate is an excellent choice for such an experience, as it is a highly elegant winery and event centre dedicated to exceptional quality. The estate opened in 2017, and despite its relatively young age, several of its wines have already received awards at the Decanter World Wine Awards, one of the largest and most influential wine competitions in the world. Visitors can also enjoy wine tastings in Badacsonytomaj. The indoor tasting area can accommodate around 40 guests, while an additional 60 people can enjoy the magnificent view from the terrace. The estate can be reached in approximately a 20-minute walk from the town centre, and Lake Balaton is also about a 20-minute walk away. Although it is currently not operating as an accommodation facility, the property has 10 rooms available, offering wonderful views of Lake Balaton.

At the time of publication, guests were welcomed for various events – such as weddings and corporate functions – by prior reservation. For longer-term operation, the owners are looking for a professional operator. Further information can be obtained from the owner of the Pátzay Wine Estate and Guesthouse at the following telephone number: +36 30 305 0339.7.

Exploring the surroundings of Lake Balaton is the perfect way to relax. If you have the opportunity, visit the local wineries and taste the exquisite Badacsony wines, which many people describe as the nectar of the gods8.
