Hungary's vineyards and the famous Hungarian writer M\u00f3r J\u00f3kai connected to the development of the villa district in Budapest's 12th District? The history of Hegyvid\u00e9k dates back to prehistoric times, as the area has been inhabited almost continuously ever since. The ancient Romans established farms and villas in several parts of what is now the 12th District, belonging to the wealthier citizens of Aquincum<sup>1<\/sup>. During the Middle Ages, nature reclaimed the area, while nobles and kings came here to hunt. The district also played an important role in supplying Buda Castle, and King Matthias Corvinus even had a water conduit built from here, extending as far as Trinity Square<sup>2<\/sup>. Until the end of the 19th century, the hillsides were covered with vineyards<sup>3<\/sup>. Another interesting fact is that Budakeszi Road was once a well-known and heavily travelled trade route. A major turning point came with the arrival of phylloxera, which devastated the vineyards. With the vines destroyed, the hillsides were gradually subdivided into building plots, marking the beginning of the area's transformation.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">Let us now make a great leap forward to 1853, when M\u00f3r J\u00f3kai purchased one of the newly subdivided plots in Hegyvid\u00e9k and established his model farm there. The area offered peace and tranquillity, far from the bustle of Buda and Pest<sup>4<\/sup>. J\u00f3kai's presence helped inspire a growing enthusiasm for villa construction<sup>5<\/sup>. Hanna Honthy, \u00c1gnes Nemes Nagy, Gizi Bajor and Imre Makovecz were also among those who owned summer residences in the area<sup>6<\/sup>. It is therefore no coincidence that the villa district gradually took shape. One beautiful property after another was built here by prominent artists, politicians and wealthy members of the bourgeoisie of the era. The proximity of nature and the fresh mountain air made the area particularly attractive.
