class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"translation-block\">B\u00e1tonyterenye is located in N\u00f3gr\u00e1d County, nestled between the M\u00e1tra and Cserh\u00e1t mountain ranges. One of the town's most remarkable landmarks is this Baroque castle, whose history we explore in this article. It was built in the 1790s at the commission of the Gy\u00fcrky family. Similar architectural examples can mainly be found in the northern regions of the Carpathian Basin, while only a handful have survived in Hungary. The castle has two storeys, with three rooms on both the ground and the upper floors. It features a mansard roof, while its most distinctive elements are the shingle-covered onion-domed corner towers on the western fa\u00e7ade<sup>1<\/sup>. The Gy\u00fcrky family owned the estate until the 1840s, using it primarily as their summer residence.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">The castle was commissioned by P\u00e1l Gy\u00fcrky, Lord Lieutenant of Krass\u00f3 County (1828\u20131846). Prior to this appointment, he served as honorary notary of N\u00f3gr\u00e1d County, later as deputy district magistrate of the Sz\u00e9cs\u00e9ny district, and from 1806 as its chief district magistrate. P\u00e1l Gy\u00fcrky was married three times<sup>2<\/sup>. His first wife was Francziska Bay, with whom he had five daughters. After her early death, he married Am\u00e1lia Kapy, and they had four daughters together. Following her untimely passing, P\u00e1l fell in love once again and married for a third time. His wife, Erzs\u00e9bet Vay, gave birth to three children: \u00c1brah\u00e1m, who inherited the family name and title, as well as Lilla and Malvin. The large family certainly benefited from such a spacious castle, although they did not live in B\u00e1tonyterenye on a permanent basis. After P\u00e1l's death, the estate was inherited by \u00c1brah\u00e1m Gy\u00fcrky, whose wife was Sarolta Orczy. During her later years, she suffered from severe mental illness and lived in the castle until her death in 1911<sup>3<\/sup>. \u00c1brah\u00e1m's son, Viktor, became connected to the Solymossy family when he married Irma Olga Solymossy in 1893<sup>4<\/sup>. They had two children together, although their marriage appears to have been one of convenience rather than love, and they divorced in the early years of the 20th century. The castle is surrounded by a 13-hectare English landscape park that now functions as a historic arboretum. Among its remarkable plant species are Spanish firs, Chinese junipers, and numerous other botanical rarities<sup>6<\/sup>. In 1975, the park was officially declared a protected nature reserve<sup>7<\/sup>.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">The impact of the Second World War was felt here as well. The estate became state property and received virtually no maintenance, causing its condition to deteriorate continuously until it became structurally unsafe, as part of the ground-floor vaulted ceiling collapsed<sup>8<\/sup>. During the 1980s, the castle also served as a filming location<sup>9<\/sup>. In 1982, it housed the educational center of the Salg\u00f3tarj\u00e1n Metallurgical Works. Until the 1990s, the main building functioned as a kindergarten, while the outbuilding accommodated municipal rental apartments until 1993<sup>10<\/sup>. In 1996, the municipality purchased the property. No substantial restoration followed, prompting the Gy\u00fcrky family to attempt to reclaim their former estate. However, the municipality insisted on retaining ownership and was unwilling to sell it<sup>11<\/sup>. Eventually, the municipality secured funding, and the castle's reconstruction began. The outbuildings were transformed into the Pal\u00f3c Homestead (Pal\u00f3cporta), which had originally served as the steward's residence and servants' quarters. In 2003, a permanent exhibition dedicated to the renowned local artist Istv\u00e1n Szab\u00f3, recipient of the Kossuth Prize, was opened in the castle.
