Rise of the Esterh\u00e1zy Family and Their Architectural Heritage from the 16th Century to the Present Day<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Did you know that a significant part of the Esterh\u00e1zy family\u2019s wealth has remained intact even today? This was made possible by the institution of the family trust (fideicommissum), which was incorporated into law in 1687 through the efforts of P\u00e1l Esterh\u00e1zy. Members of the family commissioned the construction of countless castles and manor houses, and among them were county lords, royal councillors, and members of parliament. One of them even served as Prime Minister of Hungary. In this article, we explore the history of the Esterh\u00e1zy family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The history of the Esterh\u00e1zy family can be traced back to Mogud, a member of the Salamon kindred, who served as a royal court official under King B\u00e9la III (1148\u20131196)<sup>1<\/sup>. According to a document from 1238, the two sons of Salamon, P\u00e9ter and Ill\u00e9s, divided their father\u2019s estates between them<sup>2<\/sup>. P\u00e9ter became the founder of the Esterh\u00e1zy family, while Ill\u00e9s founded the Ill\u00e9sh\u00e1zy family. The surname Esterh\u00e1zy was first adopted by Benedek in 1553, followed by his son Ferenc and his grandson Mikl\u00f3s I. He played a crucial role in acquiring the family\u2019s wealth. In fact, within only two generations, they rose from the ranks of the lesser nobility to become the wealthiest aristocratic family in Hungary. The key to their advancement was marriage<sup>3<\/sup>. Mikl\u00f3s I Esterh\u00e1zy (1583\u20131645) held the office of Palatine of Hungary. His first marriage was to Orsolya Dersffy, on 22 November 1612. According to historical sources, the widow \u2013 considerably older than Mikl\u00f3s, whose former husband had been Ferenc Mag\u00f3chy, Captain-General of Kassa (Ko\u0161ice) \u2013 had already welcomed his attention while her husband was still alive<sup>4<\/sup>. They married the day after the mourning period ended. Mikl\u00f3s also demonstrated his love and commitment by converting to Catholicism, despite having previously been Protestant. Their marriage caused a great scandal in the 17th century, but their love overcame all obstacles. Unfortunately, because Orsolya was unable to have children, she could not provide Mikl\u00f3s with an heir. However, she allowed him to have a child with another woman, which resulted in the birth of Istv\u00e1n. Orsolya died in 1619, a loss that Mikl\u00f3s struggled to overcome. Five years later, in 1624, he married Krisztina Ny\u00e1ry, with whom he lived happily until the end of his life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">This marriage produced eight children. Among them, P\u00e1l Esterh\u00e1zy (1635\u20131713) was the most significant figure regarding the growth of the family\u2019s wealth. His sister, J\u00falia Anna, was married to Ferenc N\u00e1dasdy, who was executed by beheading. As a consequence of this tragedy, P\u00e1l was able to acquire numerous estates, including those of L\u00e9ka, Steinberg, Teucht, Fels\u0151- and Als\u00f3sz\u00e9n\u00e9get\u0151, H\u00e1mor, N\u00e9metgyir\u00f3t, Fels\u0151pulya, \u00d3m\u00f3d, Horv\u00e1tzsid\u00e1ny, and Peresznyesup<sup>5<\/sup>. His first wife was Orsolya<sup>6<\/sup> Esterh\u00e1zy. After her death, he married \u00c9va Th\u00f6k\u00f6ly, with whom he had seven children. Thanks to his significant military successes, further opportunities for increasing his wealth opened up before him. Among other privileges, he received a lease for the salt trade monopoly, held the position of county lord, and was granted the title of prince. However, his most forward-looking achievement in preserving the family\u2019s wealth was that in 1695 he became one of the first members of the Hungarian nobility to transform his estates into a fideicommissum<sup>7<\/sup>. This legal institution made it possible for estates to be inherited as a single, indivisible unit. The Habsburg rulers considered this necessary in order to preserve the influence and power of important noble families for future generations. At that time, approximately 10\u201312 aristocratic families possessed such fideicommissum estates<sup>8<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>The Esterh\u00e1zy family commissioned the construction of numerous castles over the centuries. One of the most unique Hungarian castles that can still be visited today is the Esterh\u00e1zy Palace in Fert\u0151d\u2013Eszterh\u00e1za, which was envisioned and brought to life by Nikolaus II Esterh\u00e1zy \u201cthe Magnificent\u201d in 1762. Even Empress Maria Theresa was a guest here. It is important to add, however, that this ambitious project left the family heavily indebted for generations. Nevertheless, the results of this grand undertaking can still be admired today. Further Esterh\u00e1zy castles can be found in the following settlements: P\u00e1pa, Bakonyoszlop, Devecser, Szigliget, Szentl\u0151rinc, Cs\u00e1kv\u00e1r, S\u00e1rosd, Kapuv\u00e1r, Gy\u00f6m\u00f6re, Tata, Majk, R\u00e9de, Bakonyszombathely, Tam\u00e1si, Salzburg, Galanta, Eisenstadt (Kismarton), Lockenhaus (L\u00e9ka), Forchtenstein (Frakn\u00f3).<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">An interesting fact is that in Burgenland, Eastern Austria, the Esterhazy Betriebe AG operates as an asset management organisation established in a foundation-like structure for managing the Esterh\u00e1zy heritage. Their goal is to preserve the remaining family assets as a whole while continuing to develop and expand them. The organisation manages private forestry enterprises, organic farming, internationally unique collections, events, festivals, wineries, and hotels<sup>9<\/sup>. It is truly inspiring to see that the architectural heritage of a noble family which played such a significant role in Hungarian history is still carefully preserved today, and that many of these historic sites are open to visitors.
