Story of Ferenc G\u00e9mes: From Fire Insurance Fraud to Building a Palace<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9351a8c e-con-full e-flex e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"9351a8c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eba3f81 elementor-widget class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"translation-block\">Once upon a time, a poor boy from the village of Mindszent, unable to read or write, set out to seek his fortune in Orosh\u00e1za. It was the 1890s, when the milling industry in B\u00e9k\u00e9s County was flourishing. He began working as a miller's apprentice and quickly proved to have an exceptional talent for flour production<sup>1<\/sup>. Within only a few years, the owner of the Orosh\u00e1za mill entered bread baked from his flour at the Paris World's Fair. To everyone's surprise, it won a gold medal. Unfortunately, the owner had underestimated the costs associated with the exhibition and fell deeply into debt. Meanwhile, the talented young miller, Ferenc G\u00e9mes, recognised an opportunity and invested his savings in the struggling mill<sup>2<\/sup>. A few years later, he became its sole tenant. His business prospered, his wealth grew rapidly, and success followed success. Soon he was surrounded by affluent business acquaintances eager to invest with him or launch new ventures together. His story seemed almost like a fairy tale. Alongside his financial success, he also found love, marrying Etelka, the daughter of a poor servant.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">In 1905, tragedy struck. The mill burned to the ground, along with enormous quantities of grain and flour. Everything that had made him wealthy was destroyed. Fortunately, he had taken out an exceptionally high fire insurance policy, and the compensation\u2014amounting to several hundred thousand crowns<sup>3<\/sup>\u2014allowed him not only to rebuild the mill, but to replace the original single-storey building with a much larger three-storey mill. The business flourished once again. His bakery network expanded across Hungary, and the famous G\u00e9mes loaf became widely popular. However, operating costs gradually increased while revenues declined. Then, in 1909, disaster struck once more: the mill was completely destroyed by another fire. Once again, G\u00e9mes had substantial fire insurance. The payout enabled him not only to rebuild the mill yet again, but also to finance the construction of the magnificent G\u00e9mes Palace and the Diana Bath. The latter became one of the region's most popular bathing destinations after Gyop\u00e1rosf\u00fcrd\u0151, featuring both an open-air swimming pool and an indoor bathhouse<sup>4<\/sup>. As his financial position stabilised, G\u00e9mes resumed his lavish lifestyle. His magnificent Art Nouveau palace truly lived up to its name. Cooks, pastry chefs and servants bustled through its kitchens and elegant salons, where lunches and dinners for 50 to 100 guests were not uncommon. He and his wife welcomed a daughter, whose governess was an impoverished baroness<sup>5<\/sup>. G\u00e9mes also became the first person in Orosh\u00e1za to own an automobile, which he delighted in driving throughout the town and across Hungary.<\/p><p>By the 1910s, the G\u00e9mes milling empire had reached its peak. He operated 57 shops throughout the country, supplying flour that became the basis of bread enjoyed by thousands. Yet insurance companies had begun to grow suspicious of the remarkable number of \"accidental\" fires surrounding G\u00e9mes's businesses and eventually refused to insure his mills. He travelled as far as England before convincing another insurance company to provide coverage. Just in time\u2014because in 1912, the mill burned down once again. This time, however, the repeated disasters could no longer be dismissed as mere coincidence. One year later, bankruptcy proceedings were initiated against his company. The poor miller's apprentice who had once been unable to read or write had become known as an arsonist and insurance fraudster, and the prosperous empire he had painstakingly built began to collapse.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">He told his family that he was travelling abroad to negotiate with his creditors<sup>6<\/sup>. He withdrew the remaining money from the company\u2019s cash register (10,000 crowns), drove his car as far as Vienna, then sold the vehicle and used the money to escape to America, to Cleveland. There, he once again tried his luck in the milling industry, but the quality of his flour was not competitive enough, and the venture failed. Later, together with a Hungarian acquaintance named Pint\u00e9r and several foreign merchants, he entered into business and established a women\u2019s fashion store<sup>7<\/sup>. They even insured the business\u2014and, as fate would have it, this enterprise also caught fire\u2026 However, this time the scheme of building wealth through insurance payments no longer worked. Not only did his new company collapse, but G\u00e9mes himself was ruined. He lost everything and died impoverished in America.<\/p><p>The fate of the G\u00e9mes Palace was equally troubled. Since Ferenc G\u00e9mes had committed deliberate arson\u2014moreover, on three separate occasions\u2014the prosecutor\u2019s office launched an investigation against the owners of the steam mill. By the time Ferenc died in America in 1915, only his wife and daughter could be prosecuted. They were accused of falsifying company records and of paying two creditors at the expense of others. In 1916, they were sentenced to a fine of 500 crowns.<sup>8<\/sup>.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">From 1935, the building was rented by the gendarmerie. The owner offered to sell it for 38,000 peng\u0151, but the authorities were unable to determine its actual market value. It was certain, however, that under a ten-year lease agreement, the gendarmerie would have paid 30,000 peng\u0151 for its use<sup>9<\/sup>. Nevertheless, the organisation did not have sufficient funds available, and the palace never became their property. From 1948, the building functioned as a boarding school for disadvantaged children<sup>10<\/sup>. Later it stood empty, passed from owner to owner, but no one undertook any meaningful renovation. Its condition continued to deteriorate. A few years ago, reconstruction work finally began, but these efforts were eventually abandoned. Due to its location and unique interior architectural features, the palace could potentially serve as an office building or even as a social institution. Today, it is once again for sale. We hope that someone will soon fall in love with this remarkable building and restore the G\u00e9mes Palace, once built as a symbol of luxury and prosperity, to its former
