Biedermann Castle of Szenteg\u00e1t<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9351a8c e-con-full e-flex e-con e-parent\" class=\"translation-block\">Szenteg\u00e1t, a small village in Baranya County, hides a magnificent castle. It is located approximately 40 km from P\u00e9cs, and the area originally belonged to Count K\u00e1zm\u00e9r Batthy\u00e1ny<sup>1<\/sup>. However, he attempted to cover his continuously increasing and large-scale expenses through loans, which he took out from the Biedermann banking house. (The imperial court itself was also indebted to them.) The financially insolvent count eventually offered the Batthy\u00e1ny estates, later known as Szenteg\u00e1t and Mozsg\u00f3, in exchange for settling his debts. Simon and Guszt\u00e1v Biedermann became the new owners. Among Simon\u2019s children, Ott\u00f3 (1852\u20131905) received Mozsg\u00f3, while Rezs\u0151 (1854\u20131938) began construction in Szenteg\u00e1t in 1880. Rezs\u0151 was elevated to the rank of baron by Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1902.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">The settlement was established around 1870 and was surrounded by extensive forests, therefore the castle was originally built as a hunting lodge. In 1896 it was transformed into a residential building. Rezs\u0151 married Elza Bleichr\u00f6der, whose father was the banker of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck<sup>3<\/sup>. In the centre there is a two-storey wing, while the western fa\u00e7ade includes a veranda, and the building is further enhanced by a tall tower<sup>4<\/sup>. It is surrounded by a park, which once included a fountain, a swimming pool, and a palm house. These were all exceptional features of the era, affordable only for the wealthiest families. A family mausoleum was also built on the estate, which simultaneously served as the village chapel. A true curiosity is that its organ was manufactured by the renowned Angster factory.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">The Biedermann family donated significant sums to charitable causes. Among other achievements, they founded both boys\u2019 and girls\u2019 schools in Szigetv\u00e1r, and the establishment of a hospital, a fire brigade, and a narrow-gauge railway are also connected to their name. The family estate was later inherited by Rezs\u0151 and Elza\u2019s son, Imre. After 42 months of military service at the front, he created a model farm here<sup>5<\/sup>. He also considered philanthropy important: he provided financial support for the poor of P\u00e9cs, ensured education for those living on the Szenteg\u00e1t estate, and introduced old-age pensions<sup>6<\/sup>. However, in 1949, the communist regime finally caught up with them as well. Their estate was nationalized, and for the next few years, they lived in their apartment in Budapest\u2019s District V. Imre was taken away without cause by agents of the \u00c1VH (State Protection Authority); he subsequently died under unclear circumstances while in captivity at the Kistarcsa Central Internment Camp, alongside a number of other aristocrats.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">In the 1950s, the castle\u2019s movable elements\u2014such as its furniture\u2014were dispersed, the windows were bricked up, and the parquet flooring was torn up. It passed into state ownership, which saved it from total ruin. Its first renovation began in 1999 with the replacement of the roof, followed by the restoration of the fa\u00e7ade in 2007.
