social developments in the 19th century. Born into a poor Jewish family, he worked his way up to the ranks of the Hungarian nobility. In this article, we introduce one of the most remarkable figures of Baranya County and his former hunting castle in Mecsekj\u00e1nosi.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">Adolf Engel was born in P\u00e9cs in 1820. His father, P\u00e9ter Engel, was a merchant who accumulated considerable wealth during the Napoleonic Wars but later lost his fortune. As a result, Adolf, his brother Simon, and their mother lived in severe poverty. He had to leave school at an early age to support himself. He initially earned a living by selling matches and pencils door to door, and in 1836, using his savings, he opened a tobacco shop, followed later by furniture and clothing stores<sup>1<\/sup>. In his spare time, he studied in the library of the Bishopric of P\u00e9cs, where he learned both Hebrew and French, enabling him to become part of intellectual circles. He employed agents to expand his business network and distribute goods across an increasingly large area. At the age of 23, he married and eventually became the father of nine children<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">During the Hungarian War of Independence (1848\u20131849), Engel served in the National Guard. After the war, he recognized the growing demand for timber and began trading construction wood while also undertaking building projects himself. This business proved highly successful and laid the foundation for his fortune. He reinvested his profits into new enterprises, establishing a steam-powered sawmill, a parquet factory, and a coal depot in 1863. Business success was never his sole ambition. Improving the social conditions of the people of P\u00e9cs and Koml\u00f3 was equally important to him. In 1860, he purchased the Czindery Garden, making it freely accessible for local balls and community gatherings, and he also built a public steam bath. After acquiring the Fels\u0151mindszent estate in 1878 and the Mecsekj\u00e1nosi estate from Prince Alfred Montenuovo in 1880, he constructed housing, libraries, and schools, employing teachers for the children of estate workers<sup>3<\/sup>. These children received not only education but also free school supplies<sup>4<\/sup>.<\/p><p>In recognition of his outstanding professional achievements and philanthropic work, Emperor Franz Joseph I granted Adolf Engel Hungarian nobility in 1886. From then on, he was entitled to use the noble prefix \"J\u00e1nosi.\"<sup>5<\/sup>.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">Between 1890 and 1892, geological surveys were carried out on the coal deposits around Koml\u00f3, and mining engineer Simon Jex confirmed that they were suitable for extraction. In 1895, the Adolf Mine was opened, followed three years later by the Anna Shaft<sup>6<\/sup>, named after Engel's wife. Since the building has undergone very few alterations, its original stylistic features remain clearly visible today. The castle served primarily as a country retreat rather than the family's permanent residence. Located approximately 25 kilometres from P\u00e9cs, the estate covers 7,000 square metres of mature parkland. Although traces of its former grandeur are still visible on the exterior, the interior has become structurally unsafe. For many years, the castle functioned as an infant care home, but since its closure, even basic preservation efforts have largely ceased. Everything that could be removed has long since disappeared. It is truly unfortunate that the former residence of one of P\u00e9cs' most influential historical figures has fallen into such disrepair.
