from Budapest and can also be easily reached by regional train. The town, situated in Fej\u00e9r County, has a history dating back to around the year 1000, although archaeological finds indicate that Celts and Sarmatians had already inhabited the area<sup>1<\/sup>. Following the Roman conquest, the territory came under Hungarian rule. Owing to its strategic location along the important Buda\u2013Sz\u00e9kesfeh\u00e9rv\u00e1r trade route, Martonv\u00e1s\u00e1r enjoyed market privileges, a legacy reflected in the town\u2019s name. During the 16th century, however, the Ottoman invasion led to the depopulation of the settlement. Between 1784 and 1785, the foundations of today's castle were laid with the construction of a single-storey Baroque manor house. Around the same time, extensive tree planting began, forming the basis of the English landscape garden that still surrounds the estate today<sup>3<\/sup>. The village church was also built during this period in the Neoclassical style<sup>4<\/sup>. Count Antal died in 1793, leaving behind his wife, Anna Seeberg, and their children: Ter\u00e9z, Jozefin, and Ferenc. In 1799, the widowed countess travelled with her daughters to the imperial court in Vienna in the hope of finding suitable husbands for them. During this journey, she met Ludwig van Beethoven and persuaded him to give piano lessons to her daughters. Although initially reluctant, the composer eventually agreed and taught them for sixteen days. What he could not have foreseen was that the girls' brother, Ferenc Brunszvik, would later become one of his closest friends and patrons. Beethoven completed his famous Appassionata Sonata in 1806 and dedicated it to Ferenc Brunszvik<sup>5<\/sup>. During the 1820s, he initiated major renovations, giving the manor elegant Neoclassical features. The English landscape park also continued to expand, most likely under the guidance of the renowned landscape architect Heinrich Nebbien. On his recommendation, numerous tree species were planted, including ash, Japanese pagoda tree, goldenrain tree, bald cypress, giant sequoia, American ironwood, and plane trees<sup>6<\/sup>. The Szent L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Stream flows through the estate and was dammed to create the picturesque lake that remains one of the park's defining features. The castle acquired its present appearance during the 1870s, when G\u00e9za Brunszvik, son of Ferenc and grandson of Antal, transformed it in the Neo-Gothic style. It is believed that his travels to England inspired his admiration for this architectural style. Unfortunately, the ambitious construction works, combined with financial difficulties, forced the Brunszvik family to sell the estate. In 1893 it became the property of Archduke Joseph, who restored the castle in 1896 before selling it a year later to Antal Dreher, whose brewery remains one of Hungary's best-known brands<sup>7<\/sup>. During the First World War, the castle served as a military hospital. Between 1923 and 1927, Jen\u0151 Dreher carried out another major restoration. After only a few peaceful years, the Second World War once again changed the estate's fate, culminating in its nationalization in 1945.
