chieftain Turcol, who won a horseback competition and was rewarded by Grand Prince \u00c1rp\u00e1d with the settlement itself. For centuries, the village remained under royal ownership<sup>1<\/sup>. King Coloman the Learned had a royal estate here, and in 1096 he even convened a church synod in Tarcal. Throughout its history, the estate belonged not only to kings and princes but also to notable figures such as the military commander John Hunyadi. After periods of private ownership, it once again became state property, and viticulture gradually developed in the area. The first written records of Tarcal's vineyards date back to 1701, giving local winemaking a documented history of more than 300 years. Like the landscape of the Tokaj Wine Region itself, the fortunes of its vineyards experienced both prosperous and difficult periods. In 1873, a school for viticulture was established in Tarcal, while in 1880 the phylloxera epidemic devastated the vineyards. Rising above the village stands the Ter\u00e9zia Chapel, situated on Ter\u00e9zia Hill within the estate of Count Degenfeld Vineyard and Castle Hotel. It is one of the region's most romantic locations, offering breathtaking panoramic views, especially at sunset. The Baroque chapel, with its distinctive oval floor plan, was commissioned in the 18th century by Count Antal Grassalkovich as a gesture of gratitude for the generosity of Empress Maria Theresa<sup>2<\/sup>. Restored in 2015, it has since become a sought-after venue for engagement photos, weddings, and christenings.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">Arriving at the Count Degenfeld Castle Hotel, visitors are welcomed by an atmosphere of genuine aristocratic elegance, reflecting the vision of Countess M\u00e1ria Degenfeld and her husband, Dr. Thomas Lindner. The Degenfeld family's connection to the Tokaj wine region began more than 150 years ago. Count Imre Degenfeld owned vineyards in Tokaj and became one of the most influential figures in the development of regional winemaking during the 19th century<sup>3<\/sup>. He was among the founding members of the Tokaj-Hegyalja Winegrowers' Association<sup>4<\/sup>, established in 1857 to improve and regulate the quality of Tokaj wines. Following the Second World War, the family's vineyards were confiscated, forcing them to begin a new life in Germany. Decades later, S\u00e1ndor Degenfeld, together with his daughter M\u00e1ria and her husband Thomas, returned to Hungary and purchased vineyards in Tarcal in 1994, determined to continue the family's long-standing winemaking tradition. Over the years, they gradually acquired neighbouring vineyard parcels, creating a unified estate. The first major milestone came in 1996 with their first harvest. During the same year, the former training centre for cellar masters began its transformation according to the designs of architect Ferenc Salamin, a student of Imre Makovecz<sup>5<\/sup>. Today, the modern winery houses grape processing, stainless-steel tank ageing, bottling, labelling and logistics, while the original terrace and historic cellar entrance continue to enchant visitors during guided cellar tours. The estate produces a range of outstanding wines from Furmint, H\u00e1rslevel\u0171, Muscat Blanc, K\u00f6v\u00e9rsz\u0151l\u0151 and Z\u00e9ta grapes, including late-harvest sweet wines, Szamorodni and the world-famous Tokaji Asz\u00fa<sup>6<\/sup>. Organic cultivation has been practised in the vineyards since 2009, and since 2017 all wines have carried certified organic status. Following the devastating phylloxera epidemic, the education of cellar masters and winemakers became a national priority, making the institution one of the era's most significant investments. After an extensive renovation, the four-star castle hotel opened its doors in 2003. The interior design was created according to the vision of Countess M\u00e1ria Degenfeld, herself an interior designer and decorator. Her goal was to recreate an atmosphere of noble elegance, achieved through Empire-style furnishings, rich burgundy and green colour palettes, and magnificent Venetian chandeliers. The hotel also displays works by several renowned artists, perhaps the most remarkable being the monumental painting by \u00d6d\u00f6n Batthy\u00e1ny, which dominates almost an entire wall of the library<sup>7<\/sup>. Guests can relax in the elegant salon, enjoying views of the park from comfortable sofas and armchairs, or spend their time playing chess and socialising in the refined surroundings. The hotel offers twenty double rooms and a magnificent suite with a terrace overlooking the park.
