K\u00e1rolyi\u2013Csekonics Palace \u2013 from a wedding gift to a university building<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"translation-block\">In the heart of Budapest, in the 8th district, in the area bordered by M\u00fazeum Street and Reviczky Street, we invite our readers to discover the K\u00e1rolyi\u2013Csekonics Palace, which opens onto both streets. The currently visible building complex is the result of an exceptionally exciting reconstruction project, completed and handed over on 1 September 2021.\nThe building at M\u00fazeum Street 17 underwent a complete heritage restoration. The Ballroom, the Grand Staircase, the Smoking Room, the Csekonics Hall and the Aula were all restored to their former splendour<sup>1<\/sup>. Visitors are welcomed by true aristocratic magnificence, as they are transported back to the atmosphere of the 1880s.\nThe Ballroom\u2019s fresco, The Triumph of Bacchus by K\u00e1roly Lotz, has been brought back to life. The original artwork was completely destroyed during the bombings of the Second World War and later functional alterations to the building. The inlaid parquet flooring was recreated, the walls received artificial marble coverings, and the plaster stucco decorations were restored<sup>2<\/sup>.\nThe breathtaking Grand Staircase, with its steps and gallery carved from oak and linden wood in the 19th century, fortunately survived partly intact. Today, visitors can admire the original staircase after careful restoration.\nIn the Smoking Room, the K\u00e1rolyi\u2013Csekonics family once hosted balls and social gatherings for their aristocratic friends. Contemporary photographs, postcards and architectural drawings were invaluable during the historically accurate renovation process, allowing art historians and restoration specialists to study the palace\u2019s architectural past through original sources<sup>3<\/sup>.\nDuring the 19th and early 20th centuries, the representative rooms and private apartments of the count\u2019s family were located here<sup>4<\/sup>. Today, the building houses the rector\u2019s office, the senate office and additional ceremonial spaces<sup>5<\/sup>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The building at Reviczky Street 6 is almost the complete opposite of the M\u00fazeum Street wing. Here, modern solutions and practical usability were the main focus. The two buildings are in fact connected \u2013 historically by a carriage passage \u2013 and today they form the campus of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of K\u00e1roli G\u00e1sp\u00e1r University of the Reformed Church in Hungary. Modern university facilities have been created here, including lecture halls, seminar rooms, a library and recreational spaces, together with all the necessary infrastructure. Originally, this part of the complex served as accommodation for the staff and supporting functions, with cellar systems underneath, a carriage house nearby and an inner the Csekonics family. They later gave it as a wedding gift to their daughter, Margit Csekonics<sup>7<\/sup>. Her husband was Count Istv\u00e1n K\u00e1rolyi, who was a member of parliament, president of the National Casino, honorary president of the Caritas Charity Association, and a member of the board of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the National Riding School<sup>8<\/sup>. The couple commissioned the construction of the Neo-Baroque palace between 1881 and 1885. In 1938, K\u00e1rolyi Melinda, the daughter of Margit and K\u00e1roly, leased the building to the Baross Association of Merchants, Industrialists and Related Professions<sup>11<\/sup>. During the Second World War, the palace was hit by bombs and suffered severe damage. It was rebuilt afterwards, but unfortunately the original state was not fully restored. Later, several embassies moved into the building, followed by the National Technical Library, a student information centre and offices of the Public Administration and Justice Authority. The palace received official heritage protection in 2004<sup>12<\/sup>. In 2015, a government decision was made that after reconstruction, the building complex would become the property of the Reformed Church in Hungary<sup>13<\/sup>. The K\u00e1roli\u2013Csekonics Palace, reopened in 2021, now serves a dual purpose. The M\u00fazeum Street wing functions as both a university centre and an event venue, while the Reviczky Street wing has been taken over by university students, who now enjoy a modern educational environment within a former aristocratic residence.<\/p><p>Although the building complex is impressive from the outside, it hides a true architectural gem inside, providing a unique atmosphere and extraordinary spaces for events. It is particularly pleasing that its role as a representative and social centre has continued: today, an active university life takes place within the walls of the former aristocratic palace, which
