data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"translation-block\">When most people think of the Festetics family\u2019s castles, the first one that comes to mind is usually the one located in Keszthely. During the 18th century, the family rose from the ranks of the lesser nobility to become one of the most influential and wealthiest landowning families in Transdanubia. The sons of Krist\u00f3f Festetics, who commissioned the construction of the Keszthely palace, purchased the estate in D\u00e9g in 1769. The property became the possession of Lajos Festetics (1732\u20131797), the younger son, thus establishing the D\u00e9g branch of the family<sup>1<\/sup>. The manor house standing here was built in 1772 as a summer residence. At that time, Lajos Festetics and his family lived in Topon\u00e1r, in rather modest circumstances considering their financial status. He built his fortune during the Napoleonic Wars through the sale of grain produced on his estates.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">Lajos had ambitious dreams. Among his plans were the connection of model farms and the development of the road network. He entrusted the task to Ferenc Kov\u00e1ts, an engineer educated in France, although the project was only realised after Lajos\u2019s death.\nThe estates were inherited by Antal Festetics, who also took over the management of their development. In the 19th century, the expansion of the road network and the improvement of model farms began. The most spectacular element was the postal road arriving from Veszpr\u00e9m<sup>2<\/sup>. Alongside the 12-kilometre-long, perfectly straight road, a tree-lined avenue was created, at the end of which the castle could already be seen from a great distance. The reconstruction of the palace was completed by 1812. The architect was Mih\u00e1ly Pollack, born in Vienna, whose name is associated with some of the masterpieces of Hungarian Classicist architecture.\nThe D\u00e9g Castle is one of Hungary\u2019s most impressive and oldest Classicist castles. It is a U-shaped, two-storey building with a basement, featuring Doric columns and a six-column portico opening towards the garden<sup>3<\/sup>. Its appearance strongly resembles the Hungarian National Museum, which is no coincidence: both were designed by Mih\u00e1ly Pollack, and the museum is considered his greatest masterpiece.\nIn the western side projection of the castle, at the end of a nearly 30-metre-long corridor, there is an oval room that served as the ceremonial hall<sup>4<\/sup>. This was unusual, as such rooms were typically located along the central axis of the building. Opposite it was the oval-shaped bathroom, whose ceiling decorations resemble the patterns of the Calvinist church on K\u00e1lvin Square in Budapest.\nThe oval shapes, the sun symbol appearing on the fa\u00e7ade, and the eagle motifs found in several parts of the castle all refer to Freemasonry. Antal Festetics was indeed a member of this movement. For this reason, there was no staircase at the rear entrance; instead, a gravel ramp was built. The park was created at the same time as the castle and is also connected to Antal Festetics and his wife, Am\u00e1lia Spl\u00e9nyi (niece of L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Orczy). They were passionate about botany; their villa in Pest was located next to the Orczy Garden. According to recent research, the designer of the gardens was Bernard Petri<sup>5<\/sup>. At D\u00e9g, a unique English landscape garden was created, remarkable even by European standards. Ancient trees and rare botanical specimens could be found throughout the park<sup>6<\/sup>. This made it possible to dam the waters and create a small lake. This is the Serpentine Lake. Its true uniqueness comes from the small island located in the middle of the lake and the Dutch House standing on it. Built in the Dutch architectural style, its appearance is defined by the striking red brickwork. However, the original purpose of the building is particularly interesting from today\u2019s perspective. Lenke Pejacsevich, the wife of Andor Festetics, suffered from tuberculosis (a pulmonary disease). At that time, medical science believed that ammonia-rich air (which is found in high concentrations in animal urine) and fresh milk had a symptom-relieving, almost healing effect<sup>8<\/sup>. Therefore, a cowshed with six cows was created on the ground floor, while the living quarters were arranged on the upper floor. The building could originally only be reached by a small boat pulled along a stretched wire. As part of this work, a rose garden, tennis court, pergola, pump house and an antique spring were also created<sup>9<\/sup>. For four generations, for more than 100 years, the castle served the Festetics family. However, it suffered terrible losses during the Second World War and was finally abandoned by the family in 1944. A German military hospital operated in the building, which was later used as accommodation by Soviet troops. From the 1950s until 1995, the castle functioned as a children\u2019s home. Finally, in 2001 it received official heritage supervision, and reconstruction began in 2009. First, the park was restored, followed by the renovation of the castle itself between 2018 and 2022. Today, the castle operates as a visitor centre with interactive exhibitions. Visitors can learn about the history of the Festetics family, explore a model of the garden, and discover the ideas and traditions of Freemasonry on the upper floor.
