class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"translation-block\">Heckenast Guszt\u00e1v\u2019s name is primarily associated with the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence of March 1848 and with the printing of the Twelve Points, although he was not personally involved in the latter event. Far fewer people know that he had to interrupt his studies due to his family\u2019s financial difficulties and began working as a spice merchant. In 1826, he started working at Ott\u00f3 Wigand\u2019s bookshop in Pest, which he took over in 1832. In March 1838, during the great flood of Pest, he lost almost everything he owned, and his writer friends helped him rebuild his life. From the soaked and later dried books, he created his first lending library, which he later also moved to Balatonf\u00fcred, establishing the first provincial lending library in Hungary. In 1840, he entered into partnership with the printer Lajos Landerer, and from that point onward the Landerer and Heckenast printing house was established. The company published, among others, the Pesti H\u00edrlap newspaper and works by the greatest writers and poets of the era, including Mih\u00e1ly Csokonai Vit\u00e9z, D\u00e1niel Berzsenyi, Ferenc K\u00f6lcsey, Mih\u00e1ly V\u00f6r\u00f6smarty, and M\u00f3r J\u00f3kai. He also launched the collected series Hungarian Great Writers. Heckenast became one of the wealthiest citizens of his time and had the means to build a holiday home. He chose Pilismar\u00f3t as the location.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">In 1851, he purchased two adjoining plots in the settlement, both with houses on them. Until the Heckenast Villa was completed, the family lived in the more spacious house and welcomed guests there. Heckenast was a central figure in Pest\u2019s vibrant cultural life, and his circle of friends also enjoyed visiting Pilismar\u00f3t, especially after the villa was completed around 1860. The villa was a two-storey building with six rooms and was surrounded by a remarkable three-level landscaped garden. The closeness of nature could be experienced immediately upon stepping outside or looking through the windows. The painting in the upstairs hall depicted B\u00e9la, Keme and Attila, the legendary Hun leaders, as well as Prince G\u00e9za. Only fragments of this artwork have survived. Visitors were fascinated by the enormous library, paintings and graphics by German, Italian and Dutch artists, as well as works created by artists connected to Heckenast\u2019s printing house. The family enjoyed chamber music, so the villa also housed a piano, a cello and a violin. The atmosphere of the villa was extraordinary, and visitors quickly grew fond of the place.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element translation-block\">The villa also functioned as an artists\u2019 retreat. Beyond providing financial support, the printer offered artists the opportunity to create and spend shorter or longer periods living within the villa\u2019s walls. The political atmosphere of the era did not encourage combining scientific and artistic activities with political engagement, but Pilismar\u00f3t proved to be an ideal location for such intellectual gatherings. Frequent guests of Heckenast included Mih\u00e1ly V\u00f6r\u00f6smarty, M\u00f3r J\u00f3kai and J\u00f3zsef Bajza. Ferenc De\u00e1k also visited the villa; according to legend, it was here that he drafted the proposal for the Compromise of 1867 (Ausgleich) together with other prominent figures of the translation-block\">In 1878, Heckenast sold his printing house to the Franklin Society and began a new life in Pressburg (today Bratislava). The Pilismar\u00f3t estate was first used by a tenant and was later sold. It was initially acquired by the Hungarian Royal Religious Foundation, and from 1884 it came under the ownership of the forestry administration (today Pilis Park Forest Ltd.). Today, the villa stands empty and abandoned.
