story of the S\u00e1ndor family itself. After its 18th-century reconstruction, the castle experienced its golden age, which became closely linked with the legend of the \u201cDevil Rider\u201d. In the decades following nationalisation, however, the building was declared dangerously unsafe. Fully renovated and reopened in 2021, the castle once again shines in its former splendour. Now we explore its fascinating history.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">S\u00e1ndor M\u00f3ric inherited the estates of the S\u00e1ndor family in 1819, at the age of 17, after losing his father to pneumonia. His parents had protected their son from every possible hardship, especially because his elder brother had died, leaving M\u00f3ric as the only person who could continue the S\u00e1ndor family line. His education was rather incomplete, so he began studying independently. He was extremely curious, open-minded and diligent, and in a short time he mastered both Italian and French. He also demonstrated considerable musical talent: he played the piano and the zither, and even composed songs. His father had raised him with great strictness, so it is understandable that after his death the young count finally felt free to discover the world.<\/p><p>He also became acquainted with horse riding as a young adult, although his father, Vince S\u00e1ndor, had also been passionate about horses. He founded the Gyarmat stud farm and in 1802 established the stables behind the castle. (Indeed, if the Dear Reader is reminded of the S\u00e1ndor Palace in Buda Castle and its former riding hall, the assumption is correct: the predecessor of today\u2019s Office of the President of Hungary was built by Vince S\u00e1ndor of Bajna and his family.) Because the young count was considered too precious to risk injury \u2014 including from horses \u2014 he was not allowed near them. Yet he had always longed to ride. Around the age of 18, he mounted a horse for the first time, and his God-given talent immediately became apparent. He passionately developed his skills and performed increasingly daring feats on horseback. In 1831, he sold the S\u00e1ndor Palace in Buda, which was later acquired by the Pallavicini family. He invested the money gained from the sale into his passion for riding.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">According to legend, he earned the nickname \u201cDevil Rider\u201d in England after taming an exceptionally wild horse. Countless stories are associated with his extraordinary figure. It was said that he arrived at balls by riding his horse up the staircase, living up to his nickname; that he drove a four-horse carriage down the narrow steps of Buda Castle; that during winter ice floes he jumped across the Danube with a carriage full of passengers; that he leapt from balconies on horseback; and that he appeared at as many as three balls in a single night \u2014 one can only imagine the incredible speed at which he travelled. According to another famous story, he jumped over the carriage of Leontine Metternich with his horse in Vienna\u2019s Prater. The daughter of the powerful Chancellor Metternich immediately fell in love with the Devil Rider, and theirs became a true love story.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div translation-block\">Until M\u00f3ric met Leontine (and asked for her hand in marriage), he had hardly paid any attention to the inherited castle. Originally, a noble manor house had already stood here in the 15th\u201316th centuries. In 1696, it was purchased by Menyh\u00e9rt S\u00e1ndor, Vice-Lord Lieutenant of Esztergom County. Around 1720, he had the predecessor of today\u2019s castle built. His grandson was M\u00f3ric S\u00e1ndor, the \u201cDevil Rider\u201d. The young man, now deeply in love, commissioned J\u00f3zsef Hild to transform the castle. According to historical sources, the reconstruction was completed around 1834 in the Classicist style. The main building had one storey, while the auxiliary buildings remained single-storey structures. At this time, the castle received its characteristic columns on the main fa\u00e7ade \u2013 a four-column portico inspired by Greek architectural traditions.\nTo make the interiors even more extraordinary, M\u00f3ric commissioned Alessandro Sanquirico, the renowned stage designer of Milan\u2019s La Scala, to create the decorative schemes. Two magnificent rooms are connected to his name: the ceiling of the Raphael Room and the Etruscan Room, whose design was inspired by the patterns of ancient Etruscan vases. The ceiling stucco work was created by the stucco artist Mario Piazza. The ground floor contained a dining room, billiard room, card room, smoking room, winter garden and private chapel, while the upper floor housed the suites of the count and countess, as well as the weapon collection, painting gallery, library and hunting trophies. The comfort of the residents was further enhanced by central heating and a greenhouse filled with exotic plants. (Indeed, nothing demonstrates M\u00f3ric\u2019s love of horses better than the fact that even the stables were heated.)\nAfter the completion of the castle, M\u00f3ric and Leontine spent many happy years together at the Bajna residence. They had two children: Le\u00f3, who tragically died unexpectedly at the age of six, and Paulina. Paulina later married her mother\u2019s half-brother, Prince Richard Metternich, who travelled extensively as a diplomat. His charming wife accompanied him and possessed exceptional social skills. Fashion played a defining role in her life: she became a true trendsetter of her era, a regular guest at the imperial court in Paris, and even founded a fashion club in Vienna. The couple had three daughters, and the family spent much time with the children at Bajna Castle. In 1850, he sustained a severe head injury during one of his stunts, and afterwards he was never the same again. He lived under constant medical supervision for another 28 years.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">Decades later, during the Second World War, the last descendants of the Metternich-S\u00e1ndor family left the castle in the 1940s. In 1944, Metternich-S\u00e1ndor Clementine fled to Switzerland. In December of that year, Soviet troops entered the area and began looting the castle. The greatest damage was caused by the German counteroffensive in January, which was accompanied by the complete plundering and destruction of the building. The castle was used as a military hospital, and corpses were even stored in the chapel. In every possible way, the dignity of the S\u00e1ndor\u2013Metternich Castle of Bajna was brought to ruin. After the war, the building became an agricultural cooperative, then a machinery station and later an aluminium production facility. It also housed Hungary\u2019s only institution for training female tractor drivers. The once magnificent English landscape garden was cut apart, and a public road was built through it. Between 1967 and 1972, a local history exhibition operated in the castle, but only for a short time because the building had become dangerously translation-block\">From the 1980s onwards, the castle came under heritage protection. The roof was replaced in the 1990s as part of preservation efforts. By 2016, however, it had deteriorated severely \u2013 despite being considered by Istv\u00e1n Sz\u00e9chenyi one of Hungary\u2019s most beautiful castles, worthy of noble life. In 2018, a complete restoration began within the framework of the N\u00d6F programme, and the renewed castle opened to the public in 2021.
