class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"translation-block\">Budapest \u2013 V\u00e1rosligeti Fasor (City Park Avenue) The avenue known today as V\u00e1rosligeti Fasor has borne several names throughout its history. From 1874 it was called V\u00e1rosligeti Fasor (City Park Avenue), from 1920 Queen Wilhelmina Avenue, from 1950 Gorky Avenue, and since 1991 it has once again carried its original name. Why was it named after Queen Wilhelmina? Following the First World War, members of the Dutch Reformed Church became aware of the severe hardship faced by Hungarian children. They organized a humanitarian program through which Hungarian children could spend at least two months with host families in the Netherlands. The first train departed from Budapest on 10 February 1920, while the 100th train left on 17 April 1926. By 1930, a total of 28,563 Hungarian children had participated in this remarkable initiative. Additional support came in the form of community kitchens that provided meals for approximately 1,000 children. The only requirement was that the children receive religious and moral education, which was offered through Sunday schools at fifteen locations in and around Budapest. Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands served as the patron of the program, and in gratitude the avenue was renamed in her honour in 1921. During the communist era, it was renamed after the Russian novelist and playwright Maxim Gorky before eventually regaining its historic name.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">During the final decades of the nineteenth century, V\u00e1rosligeti Fasor became one of Pest's most prestigious residential districts, although it had already been a fashionable area since the early 1810s. It became synonymous with wealth and social prestige, as prosperous entrepreneurs and industrialists built elegant summer residences here. Owning a villa on the avenue\u2014or even receiving treatment in one of its renowned sanatoriums\u2014was considered a clear symbol of status. The city deliberately allocated unusually large plots, indicating that the area was intended as a villa district rather than a densely populated residential neighbourhood. Property owners were required to landscape their gardens and position their houses away from the street, leaving generous front gardens. The avenue connected the bustling Kir\u00e1ly Street with City Park and the City Park Roundabout, providing an elegant promenade where residents could walk or ride in carriages beneath rows of horse chestnut and poplar trees. The original poplars were later replaced by horse chestnuts, planted partly to stabilize the sandy soil. The avenue gradually lost some of its prominence as today's Andr\u00e1ssy Avenue developed into Budapest's principal boulevard. The horse chestnut trees later suffered from increasing traffic, extensive paving, and the spread of the horse chestnut leaf miner during the 1980s, leaving none of the original trees standing today. The building acquired its present appearance in 1908 and was designed by the distinguished architectural partnership of Alad\u00e1r K\u00e1rm\u00e1n and Gyula Ullmann, who also designed several pavilions for the 1896 Millennium National Exhibition, along with numerous villas, apartment buildings, the Weiss Houses, the Kir\u00e1ly Bazaar, and the headquarters of MAHART. The spacious villa featured an impressive range of rooms, including separate bedrooms and bathrooms for the family and servants, a cloakroom, laundry room, ironing room, children's bedroom, playroom, breakfast room, dining room with serving pantry, and an elegant salon. The original client was \u00c1rmin B\u00edr\u00f3, founder and first managing director of the Rimamur\u00e1ny\u2013Salg\u00f3tarj\u00e1n Ironworks Company. Later owners included P\u00e1l, Alfr\u00e9d, and Gy\u00f6rgy Fellner, who inherited the property after the death of their father, Henrik Fellner, director of the Leipziger Vilmos Spirits and Confectionery Company. From 1948 the villa belonged to the National Association of Spice Merchants, from 1954 to the Hungarian Writers' Association, and in 1957 it became state property. Since 1958, it has served as the headquarters of the Hungarian Trade Union of Teachers. A special feature of the building is that it contains several ornate, painted glass windows and doors, which can still be seen today in their original splendour. Although there is no documented evidence, it is possible that they were created in the workshop of Miksa R\u00f3th, the renowned Hungarian stained-glass artist and mosaic designer. What is certain, however, is that he worked on several villas in the surrounding area, including the R\u00e1th Gy\u00f6rgy Villa. It is well worth taking a walk along the avenue and admiring these architectural treasures. The late autumn and winter months are especially suitable for such a visit, when the buildings are no longer hidden behind the foliage of the
