Originally, it referred to a rural estate or farmstead and only later came to describe a country residence located outside towns and larger settlements. The emphasis was on self-sufficiency: the surrounding land was used for agriculture, while crops, tools and equipment were stored in the estate's outbuildings, which formed an integral part of the villa complex. It is remarkable how the meaning of the word has evolved over the centuries to become today's understanding of a luxurious private residence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The word castle derives from the Latin castellum, meaning \"small fortress.\" Its modern meaning developed mainly during the 19th century. Earlier castles had a defensive function, often resembling fortified strongholds surrounded by moats. Besides the owners\u2014the high nobility and wealthy landowners\u2014and their families, an entire household of servants and estate workers lived on the property, ensuring the smooth operation of daily life and managing the surrounding estate. The size and grandeur of each castle depended on the financial resources of its owners. Many included libraries, art collections, and rooms dedicated to culture and learning, reflecting the owners' wealth and intellectual interests. Maintaining such an estate required considerable financial resources. In most cases, the costs were covered by taxes collected from the villages belonging to the estate. Gambling was also common among the aristocracy, and it was not unusual for part of a family's wealth\u2014or even an entire estate complete with its castle\u2014to change hands as payment for debts. Perhaps the most fortunate fate is when a castle becomes a museum, preserving the surviving traces of aristocratic life and culture for future generations.
